A Day Trip to Rincon and Gotomeer: Exploring Bonaire’s History and Nature

One of our favorite day trips on Bonaire takes us to Rincon, the island’s oldest town, and Gotomeer, a serene saltwater lake where flamingos gather. It’s a perfect blend of history, local culture, and the island’s natural beauty.

We love taking a scenic drive to Rincon, a town nestled in a valley, full of rich history and character. Founded in the early 16th century by the Spanish, Rincon is the oldest town on Bonaire and one of the oldest in the Caribbean. Walking through the quiet streets, you’ll find colorful houses and a relaxed atmosphere that offers a glimpse into Bonaire’s past. We always enjoy wandering around, popping into the small local shops and cafés, and experiencing a slower pace of life.

For lunch, we highly recommend stopping at Kos Bon So, a hidden gem that offers fantastic local dishes. It’s a place that often surprises you with live music, making the experience even more enjoyable. The food is always fresh, and the welcoming atmosphere makes it a perfect spot to relax before continuing your adventure.

After lunch, make sure to stop by John’s Homemade Ice Cream—trust us, it’s some of the best ice cream you’ll ever have! Whether you’re in the mood for something fruity or creamy, John’s has a wide variety of flavors that never disappoint. It’s the perfect treat before heading to your next destination.

While in Rincon, we also love visiting the Cadushy Distillery, where you can sample unique liqueurs made from the native cactus. It’s a fascinating process to learn about, and the distillery itself has a charming, laid-back vibe. The friendly staff are always happy to share more about the traditional methods used to create these Bonairean spirits, and we never leave without taking a bottle home with us.

After enjoying the town, we head to Gotomeer, one of the most tranquil places on the island. The lake is known for its flocks of flamingos, which gather in the shallow saltwater, creating a stunning view. We often pull over, grab our binoculars, and spend time watching these graceful birds as they wade through the water. Gotomeer is also home to a variety of other bird species, so it’s a great spot for nature lovers.

We like to wrap up the day by finding a quiet spot around Gotomeer to take in the views, relax, and reflect on the history and natural beauty that make Bonaire so special. A day trip to Rincon and Gotomeer always leaves us feeling more connected to the island and its rich heritage.
